Shockleaders are special lines that are added to the end of your mainline for a number of reasons. The main reason being that it allows the angler to cast heavy weight without the fear of breaking your mainline when casting. Shockleaders are almost essential for the shore angler or long distance caster. As braid has virtually no stretch, a leader can also be added to cushion the impact when casting.
Tapered leaders are also available which minimises the size of the knot created when joining the leader to the mainline. This can help with casting and also reduce the amount of weed picked up when fishing weedy grounds.
